Constant Anton Nieuwenhuys

The Dutch painter and sculptor Constant Anton Nieuwenhuys was born on July 21, 1920 in Amsterdam. After his studies, Nieuwenhuys attended the school of applied arts and the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. From 1946 the artist lived in Paris and London. In Paris Nieuwenhuys met Asger Jorn and co-founded the "CoBrA" group of artists, whose name was formed as an acronym for the cities of Copenhagen, Brussles and Amsterdam.
That same year, Nieuwenhuys also founded the "Nederlands Experimentele Groep" together with Karel Appel. From 1957 to 1959 Nieuwenhuys was a member of the International Situationists, under whose influence he began to work on the utopian "Project New Babylon", in which he dealt with the issue of architecture from 1959 to 1969.
In 2002, he took this project to "documenta 11". Nieuwenhuys also represented the Netherlands at the Biennale in Venice and held exhibitions in Germany at the "Galerie van de Loo" and at the Krefeld "Museum Haus Lange". The "Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn" presented a retrospective of Constant Anton Nieuwenhuys's work in 1986.
He died on August 1, 2005 in Utrecht.
